Meet the artist behind NOVI MEDI PARK's new artwork
“The exciting thing about NOVI MEDI PARK is that it is a place where people meet to create something new. In that way, research and art are actually very similar. Both start with curiosity and a desire to understand the world in new ways.”
This is how artist Alessandro Painsi describes the project he will create for NOVI MEDI PARK over the summer.
When NOVI MEDI PARK opens this fall, it will not only be a new gathering point for healthcare and life science companies. The area will also have its own art garden, where nine sculptures by Alessandro Painsi will invite reflection and new ways of seeing the world.
Over the summer, Alessandro will create the sandstone art installation, which will become an integral part of the surroundings at NOVI MEDI PARK. The sculptures will each have their own expression, but common to them all is the story of development and the traces we leave through life.
But who is the artist behind the work, and where do the ideas come from?
From dance to art
Alessandro's path into the world of art has been anything but traditional.
He is originally from Austria, but came to Denmark at the age of 17 to pursue a professional career in dance. For more than 10 years, Latin dance was his great passion. As his interest in dance waned over time, he found a new creative expression through visual art and design.
Today, Alessandro works across several art forms, but common to everything he creates is an interest in relationships and the stories we carry with us.
In Aalborg, he helped establish North Urban Art Studio, which is today one of Denmark's largest creative communities.
Humans as inspiration
For Alessandro, the human being is at the center. He is inspired by the courage to create change and follow his dreams.
The facial symbol, which recurs in many of his works, actually originated as a portrait of his girlfriend more than 12 years ago. Over the years, the motif has become simpler until it evolved into a symbol of identity.
This very symbol will be the focal point of the artwork at NOVI MEDI PARK.
The nine sculptures are all based on the symbol of the face. Each of them has its own expression, but together they tell a story.
When different professions meet
In science, new discoveries rarely arise from one approach alone. Progress is created through dialogue, collaboration and the exchange of knowledge.
This idea is central to the artwork at NOVI MEDI PARK.
Each of the nine sculptures represents its own voice, but only in the interaction between them does the whole emerge. In this way, the work becomes a symbol of our ongoing search for understanding and of the fundamental idea behind research and innovation: that new solutions arise when different disciplines meet.
In many ways, the sculptures also reflect the idea behind NOVI MEDI PARK, where entrepreneurs, healthcare professionals and companies come together to develop the healthcare solutions of the future. Just as the sculptures each contribute with their own expression, the strongest results often arise at the intersection of different competencies.
The meeting between art and health innovation
For Alessandro, art and science are more closely connected than many might think.
Both are about asking questions, exploring the unknown, and trying to understand the world in new ways. Where science works with data and analysis, art works with intuition, experiences, and interpretation. But the driving force is the same: the desire to discover something new.
NOVI MEDI PARK will be a place where future healthcare solutions are developed, and that is precisely why Alessandro sees the artwork as a natural part of the surroundings.
From sketch to sandstone
The process often starts with a simple thought or sketch. Alessandro works intuitively at first, exploring form and proportions, before gradually developing the idea through drawings and dialogue with the collaborators involved.
It is no coincidence that he has chosen to work with sandstone. The material bears traces of time and nature's own processes. At the same time, it has a weight and durability that fits well with the project's themes.
Part of everyday life in NOVI MEDI PARK
Alessandro looks forward to the art installation becoming a part of everyday life in NOVI MEDI PARK, and he hopes, above all, that it will make people stop.
